Snack Video is owned by Joyo Technology Private Limited, which is part of an Chinese company called Kuaishou International Business. Snack Video is almost identical to TikTok and is well-known as a substitute in countries that TikTok is not allowed. Its headquarters are within Jakarta, Indonesia.
Snack Video is replete with features. They offer a range of video creation tools, including stickers, filters for in-app use effects music library, and more. They also have a personalized feed that is tailored to specific user preferences based on their interaction with the app, basic editing tools, support for multi-languages live streaming Explore and top-of-the-line pages as well as the option of monetisation, such as collaborations with creators through brand partnerships and virtual gifts. Ban in India
Snack Video was banned by the Government of India on 24 on November, 2020. It was one of the 43 Chinese applications blocked from authorities at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 69A in the Information Technology Act, 2000. In the wake of the banning of TikTok for use in India, Snack Video had been a prominent alternative. Snack Video was experiencing an increase in downloads in India before it was banned in the hands of government officials.
The decision to prohibit Snack Video and 42 other Chinese apps was made as a response to information received from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs. In the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology the ban was issued to 43 Chinese apps based on a variety of information gathered from inputs, which showed that the apps were engaged in activities that were detrimental to the integrity and sovereignty of India as well as the defense of India and security of the public order and security of the state.
In the case the case of Snack Video, reports highlighting the site’s links to a previously prohibited Chinese app called Kwai, as well as the possibility of harvesting data and rebranding to bypass the ban may be a factor in triggering to the GOI to block access in China.
Snack Video and 42 other Chinese apps that were banned in November of 2020 were part of the long listing of Chinese apps that are already prohibited in India from June 30, 2020.
Current Status in India
Snack Video continues to be prohibited in India and there is no sign that the ban will be lifted from this platform or other prohibited Chinese apps. Snack Video had reached over 180 million downloads in India before it was removed.
